South Whidbey Recovery Cafe
South Whidbey Recovery Café will create a safe community for people healing from substance use disorders, trauma, mental health issues, homelessness, grief, loneliness, and other issues. This project’s volunteers are working with the Recovery Café Network to implement their model, which has been developed, refined, and replicated over the past twenty years. A Recovery Café is a refuge for healing and hope; it’s a loving community that anchors its Members in sustained recovery. South Whidbey Recovery Cafe will serve nutritious food to members and visitors each day they are open at no charge. Members are asked to be drug and alcohol free when they come to the Café; they commit to participating in a Recovery Circle, a peer-led support group; and are asked to give back.
Recovery Cafés are well-known and seen as an asset by members of the Whidbey Island community and beyond. They are well supported by donations by individuals and organizations in the community, as well as by grants from local, regional, state-wide and country-wide organizations and governments. South Whidbey Recovery Cafe anticipates opening in a temporary location by midsummer 2025, beginning operations two days a week for three hours each day. An all volunteer-staff will serve meals through a commercial kitchen either at or near the site. This project will be one of 84 Member Cafés spread across North America from Vancouver BC to the US Virgin Islands and a very exciting addition to the Whidbey Island and Cascadia community.
